Making catagories on SD card
stunbear said on May 06th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Just got my Garmin nuvi 760. When I upload my POI to SD card, I upload it into a directory such as" Rest Areas" and "Shopping Sites "for example. When I go to my Custom POI in my GPS unit, it list all the Rest Areas individually and thn it list all the shopping sites. Is it possible to lump these into seperate catagories for easy retrieval. Thanks for any help. Stunbear

You need to make subfolders and break them down like you want. See this post http://www.poifriend.com/forum/73/?14 and if you need more help let us know.

charles45: Thank you for responding. I set up a catagory such as POI with a sub catagory of Department stores on my desktop. I copied the department stores poi's that I got from this site to the sub catagory. If I try to use the POI loader without making a directory on the SD card, I get a no directory error message. So I made an identical catagory and sub catagory on the SD card and then used the POI loader. It loaded all the POI's, but does not give a catagory and sub directory like POI and sub of Department stores. I must be missing something. I'm new to this so please bear with me.

Let me run through the steps.
1.Make a main folder and call it my pois
2.Right click on the main folder and make the sub folders and name them like you want.
3.Put the csv files in the correct sub folder not the main folder.
4.It should look something like this on your computer.
>>My pois=main folder
>>>Department stores=subfolder
>>>>Pennys.csv
>>>>Sears.csv
>>>>Walmart.csv
>>>Resturants=subfolder
>>>>Cracker Barrel.csv
>>>>Sonny's.csv
>>>Redlight cameras=subfolder
>>>>Redlight cameras.csv
>>>>Speed cameras.csv
5.Hook gps up to computer
6.Run POILoader and direct to the main folder not(subfolders)and complete the download
7.Now go to gps click on where to,my locations, custom pois or extras I believe is on your gps and touch screen.
8.You should now see the listing of all your custom pois.
9.It should be noted that when you use poiloader it defults to express mode.If you want to set alerts use manual mode and set as you like.

charlesd45 said on May 07th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
You can download them from this site and others and you can also make them yourself using notepad and excel and saving them as a csv(comma delimited)file.

charlesd45: Thank you. I did as you instructed, and now I see my sub-catagories. My mistake was that I was clicking on the sub -cat and not on the main one. This forum is a great help with people like you helping us new comers. I hope as I get more experienced, I can return the favor. Thanks again

Glad to help.Using the subfolders is a nice addition. When travelling my wife and I are always looking for the next Cracker Barrel.

stunbear. One thought the model you have can do mp3's.You can add them to your subfolders and get voice alerts.Just stick them in your subfolders and name them the same as the csv file except for the extension.

charlesd45 said on June 01st, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Just follow the steps above I outlined for making subfolders on your computer. Now when you run poil loader it will come to screen to find device. There is a drop down window just click on arrow for it to show now select the sd card not the gps. Then click next to download your poifiles to the sd card.

How do I change the .csv files to .ov2 for use on a TomTom GPS? Thanks,
charlesd45 said on August 14th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
If you download from this site it gives you the option on the format you download to.Just pick the file you want to download, click show pois, download for my gps and pick Tom Tom.You can also go to this site to convert a csv file to a ov2. http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/poi_manager.php

Thanks, Charlesd45, You made it very easy.

the easiest way is to use THIS site, upload the csv file as a poi, then download the same file by selecting garmin, this then converts the csv to ov2

Why would he need to convert it after downloading from this site?Member can select the Tom Tom format.

What prog do you use to "edit" specific POIs? Been using MS Excel, but can't get the address/phone to layout nicely, is a jumbled mess. Tried creating a seperate columns for each datafield. but does not display all. D/Led a few POIs here and they're layed out nicely (i.e. Target). Maybe just being to picky. BTW.....have a Garmin nuvi 350. Thanks.
mtaylor63 said on August 25th, 2008 at 11:34 am
the best prog to use is Microsoft Excel to create the file, save as csv and upload it
charlesd45 said on August 25th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
hittman1969 I use google maps with takeitwithme process that gives a good lay out, see this post http://www.poifriend.com/forum/268/?1 .If you use excel you can get your line breaks by putting cursor where you want the break then hit ctrl and enter.I also use the asap utilities for editing duplicates etc you can get the free unregistered version at http://www.asap-utilities.com/ .It is a add on for excel.Once you download it you will see it on all your excel sheets at top right. It elimates the formulas use for excel.

Whats the difference between .gpi and .CSV files in loading into a nuvi 360 ? I have been using .cvs and wondered if .gpi was any better...........
Thanks
Bootprint said on November 16th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
I think you mean gpx, gpi files are the output from Garmin's poiloader.
drifterrider said on November 16th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I was reading the first post from this thread and it said .gpi
http://www.poifriend.com/forum/73/?14
charlesd45 said on November 16th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
drifterrider .When you put the files on your computer to download to the gps they are csv or gpx files. After you run poiloader they are converted to the unit or sd card as a gpi file.
