Custom POI Icons?
RyanTh said on June 01st, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Hi. I am really new to the whole GPS thing, so be gentle with me;). I have a Garmin nuvi 200 that a friend gave me and I LOVE it. I have experimented with putting custom POIs on it, and though it works, I was wondering about icons for these. In the Garmin POILoader help file, it says:
"POI Loader can associate customized bitmaps (.bmp) with the points in a data file if the .bmp has the same file name as the data file. For example, a customized bitmap named "Speed_30.bmp" would be associated with all the the points in the file named "Speed_30.csv" or "Speed_30.gpx."
I tried this with a custom POI I have on Barnes and Nobles, but I didn't see the icon/pic anywhere on the unit? Did I do something wrong?
Thanks!
Ryan

u did nothing wrong... just make sure you put your map detail on highest (think it is under settings) and they should become visible on the map.

Thanks GPS Freak,
I can see the icon now when I hit the "map" button in the Custom POI screen. So I know it went in there. But if I put that as a destination, I still just get the checkered flag on the map view in the main screen. Does the icon only show up if it's a waypoint/via point?
Thanks again!
Ryan

I have learned that different units act differently. I have a 360 and a 750 nuvi. they both have their own way of putting out the info stored on the device. you have to play around with them sometimes until you get it to do what you want it to..

Ryan, I have a Nuvi 200W and love it too. The icon can be no bigger than 24x24. Go to www.resizr.com to make an icon of any picture. You need to label the icon in your file the exact name of the associated poi file, exept the extension will be .bmp. By the way, you can take out all those underscores in the file names. Makes for better viewing later and the Nuvi will take the files without them. Hope that helps...

PS: you CAN leave spaces in the names where the underscores were...

Don't forget...POIfriend automatically resizes whatever logo you upload to the proper size for your GPS unit.
