Notification of POI File Updates
DoctorTom said on June 26th, 2009 at 8:28 am
I'm a new user - just joined today. I noticed that if you are not a member and go to download a file, a pop-up asks if you want to be notified of any updates of the file. There is no such note if I am logged on. Does that mean that if I download any file, I automatically get notifed of any updates tothe file? TIA

Welcome Tom! If you are NOT a member, you will get an email anytime the POI Group has been updated (that you downloaded). If you ARE a member, then you will automatically get e-mail updates for any POI Group that you have put in 'My POIs' (when it is updated). The e-mail updates will also cover suggestions made against your own groups, and friend requests.
Also, when you log in, if you look in the upper left area, you will see the notificiation window as well. Hope this helps!

Thanx. I'm a little confused on how to create my own POI group. I wnet through the process and it talks about uploading files or doing it manually. I'm not sure how to reply. My goal is to create my own group and then add existing files that are already on the site to it. This way, it's one-stop shopping for me. What am I missing? TIA

I would create my own group and then if I wanted to use data from other groups, I would download in the garmin format which provides 4 columns. Then I can upload those files into my group. Hope this makes sense!

I guess I could but then they would not be kept current. I ithink what I want is a feature that does not yet exist. Perhaps what we need is a "My Favourites" folder. You create links to the downloads of your choice. Your link is to the real file, which is kept current by the author.

Um, pardon me. I think that's thhe purpose of the existing "My POIs" file. Click on "Tools+corrections" and then click "Add to My POIs"
Please read the FAQ and refer to the Help centre

I'm not sure that the site can currently do what you're looking for. Essentially you need to either have all of the groups that interest you in "My POIs" (which essentially is a favourites list on this site). Then as they get updated you can download each file to keep it current.
OR... you can take POIs from other groups and add them to a big master file, but as you mentioned, they wouldn't be kept current. The updates that are provided by the community at large is really the best part about this site, so you'd be missing out on all of that if you went that route.
Personally - I have a bunch of POIs organzed into folders and I just download any updated ones (replacing the one already stored on my hard drive) every few weeks and upload them to my GPS. Or I do it right before I go on a trip or something. I find that keeping all of the POI groups in a folder structure on my hard drive is nice and easy because with my GPS (Nuvi 270), you need to load all of your POIs each time (including ones that haven't changed). So I just keep a few folders with all of the CSV files inside and update the ones that need updating every so often.
A lot of the updates to the POIs are for locations outside of my city, and honestly, the chance of it affecting me is quite minimal. That's why every few weeks is usually sufficient.

MUSHMASON got it right. I guess I didn't find it in the FAQ's, which is where I began my search. I think it would be more intuitive that such a link not be through Tools and Corrections, but rather in plain view.

Web sites require the use of the "Chicken method instruction system".
It's called "Hunt and peck". A great deal of hunting for a little bit of pecking.
