Planning Routes on Pioneer AVIC x-series

I've been using a Garmin Nuvi 750 for a couple of years, but got tired of all the hassle with cables, mounting it before driving, then pulling it all down when stopping so a thief doesn't break in to the car and steal it, etc. So I bought one of the Pioneer AVIC X-series in-dash units. It's really nice except for route planning.
When I take trips, I like to take the back roads and plan my trip to avoid major cities and stay off the interstate as much as possible. With the Garmin, I used their MapSource software to load and plan the trip. It often took some tweaking, but was generally easy to do.
Does anyone have any suggestions for route planning with the AVIC? It uses AVIC Feeds and POIs, which could be saved into a group and then used for routing, but it uses coordinates and it's very tedious.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Bob
