I have a CSV file with lat, long and info columns. I've tried converting it at http://tomtom.gps-data-team.com/poi/csv2ov2.php but I keep getting an OV2 file that contains only the follow text:

okay... i'm really new at this... i tried uploading the csv here too but got a blank ov2 file as well.
here's a sample line from the csv file:
W74.522851,N43.444482,Alger Island 303 Petrie Road Old Forge NY 13420 (315)369-3224
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks.

Did you check out the information on this site in the FAQ section? If not go to this link which should help.

thank you! getting closer -- but i must still be doing something wrong.
here's a sample line from the revised csv:
43.444482,-74.522851,Alger Island,303 Petrie Road Old Forge NY 13420 (315)369-3224
and here's the only content in the resulting ov2 file:
ÄJB

whoops... the ov2 content is:

weird... it won't copy and paste into this window properly!
it's a string of 7 random letters and accents, followed by the first POI name (Alger Island). fyi, there are over 41 POIs/lines in the CSV file.

could it be because i'm on a mac?

Now I am not all that technically inclined however, my understanding is that ov2 files are not generally readable. Did you import the file into your TomTom and if you did is the file corrupted there as well?

PurpleMe is right; OV2 files are binary files that will not display properly in a text editor.

i just uploaded a test csv of the cn tower. some issues...
1. when downloaded to my pc, the ov2 filesize is listed as 0 kb
2. the POI shows up in my tomtom list, which didn't happen with previous tests
3. but when i select it, i get an error saying "no locations found near cursor"
4. when i display the poi online via the poifriend website, the location is out lake ontario, closer to st. catherine's than toronto! i took the coords from the cn tower website. what the heck am i doing wrong?
if you want to have a look-see, it's the only poi listed by me.
thank you!

Hi poimick, chances are the ov2 file while not 0 kb is very small since you only have one location. Are you getting the error "no locations found near cursor" when you download it to your TomTom? As to the coordinates, it is certainly possible that if the CN Tower site does list geo coords that they might be wrong. You can always adjust the coordinates by using the "Edit POI" feature on our site. Also when you are creating your CSV file are you following the instructions provided on our site exactly? If you put in extra quotes, etc in error this will cause a problem.

poimick...just as a reminder here is the information from our FAQ section regarding CSV files and POIfriend:
"It is important to note that you can ONLY import formats compatible with GPS devices - not just any CSV file etc. For the most part, this will mean that you are able to import a latitude, longitude, description and address details.
If you would like to build your own CSV (or Excel file), we suggest you use the following format (where commas denote column breaks):
Longitude,Latitude,POI description,Address
example: -115.45678,41.32144,ABC Restaurant at 23 Main St,"23 Main St, Anytown, USA"
Note that the longitude and latitude should be in decimal degrees format, and you should enclose the POI description and Address in quotes if it contains any commas (to avoid any unintended column breaks).
Note that POIfriend limits the number of POIs you can automatically import to 15,000."
Hope this helps.

Thanks. To the best of my knowledge, I'm following the directions. I must be missing something small.
You asked about the "no locations found near cursor" error. I get this after I've uploaded the POI to my TomTom -- when I'm trying to select it for navigation. So the POI name is showing up in the list, but the location isn't recognized. The coords are input as long and lat using +/- instead of W/N. FYI, the 0 kb file size also happened with a previous try converting about 40 NY State park locations.
Anyway, I'll take another crack at it when I have the patience. Thanks again for the help.
